Lapse (Thriller Opening) Evaluation

1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media?

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I didn't specifically aim for my film to represent a particular social group but people may argue because of the way the characters are dressed it could represent the middle class. The main character is wearing an Aztec shirt from Topman which are reasonably priced, these types of tops are very common among middle class teenagers. He is also wearing some lightly washed jeans and Adidas trainers, it is clear that the main character is dressed in casual clothing and not for a specific occasion but it is very presentable and quite smart. The appearance of the second character is wearing a burgundy jumper which are yet common among teenagers, he also also wearing black jeans and beige desert boots. This type of clothing is quite expensive and yet still casual, this may be a representation of the middle class. I think it can be associated with youth as well. Often people stereotype the youth with crime and violence, this is portrayed throughout the opening. Also the characters involved in the film are of a young age so this is another reason why it could be associated with youth.

What types of media institutions might distribute your media product and why?

I produced my film on a very small budget and with equipment that cost very little. Therefore the institute would not be able to pay much for it distributed. They would have to hire an independent distributing firm to get our film known. Because of their very small budget they would not have the capabilities to get the film shown over many countries and in several cinemas like the large companies such as Sony and Warner bro's. Working title and new line cinema would be likely options for us to hire, this is because they are known for successfully distributing films for low budget films. I believe that they will be able to maximise the sales of the film I have produced.

A popular way for small budget films to get recognised is through displays at film festivals. This is beneficial for both the producers and the distributors, it helps us, the producers, because we unknown and it will publicise me as a producer, also it will help the distributors because they're getting the film shown and are doing their job properly. Film festivals are a very easy way to get our film viewed by many people at a time for very little money.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

A lot of deep thought went into to deciding what age rating would be suitable for this film. Because of the content of the film which shows drugs and violent scenes which include deadly weapons, I have decided that it would be appropriate for 15+. This fits the British of classification criteria and it also provides us with a very large potential audience, this is vital when produce a film so I can maximise profits. If the film was rated higher than 15+ it would have less of a target audience and not as many people will be able to view the film because of legal reasons. I think 15+ is a very suitable age rating, i also think that it is appropriate for both genders. I believe that more males will come and watch due to the nature of the film but it can also provide a lot of entertainment for females. As the film goes on there will get introduce to important female characters which will make it more appealing for them. This film will also attract people that love the genre of thrillers and love the rush of adrenalin and enjoy being on the edge of their seat throughout. It may also appeal to people that are big fans of other genres as well, such as, horror and crime.

How did you attract/address your audience?

If I had a larger budget then I would've liked to use expensive and very effective uses of marketing such as TV adverts, large billboards and trailers before similar films are viewed at cinema's. This would be very helpful to get my film known and it would get many people viewing the film which would create large revenue. As this isn't the case and we only have a small amount of money to get our film known I had to use advertising the cost much less. I thought the use of the internet and social networking would be the most effective as there are millions of users and its free to use.

Social networking was very helpful when trying to attract potential viewers. It has millions of users and is free to use, I thought that this would be the most effective way to get our film known. I posted my film and YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. I composed many status' and tweets so many people we aware of the film and I believe that it attracted many people to watch it. I also created a Facebook page for my film which included some fun facts about the the film when producing, this was to give fans an insight to how the production was coming along. If I had a much greater budget i would've paid Facebook and Twitter to display information about my film on everyone's timeline for my target audience. This would get huge amount of people knowing and having an interest in my film. This would hopefully have a knock-on effect to the people that want to view my film and hopefully it would be a great success.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of construction these production?

One of the most important things that I have learned is the use of the internet and social network when distributing a film. Social networking is very useful for all types of films but especially for small budget films. Small budget films main tactic will be to use Web 2.0 effectively. I believe that I have used it effectively when trying to attract people to watch my film. Not only was it very helpful for trying to distribute, but when I was researching how to make my film better and how to use techniques effectively it all from the internet. It has been very helpful when producing this piece and it has a massive role in the underground film industry.

Also I have learned that the better quality of equipment that is used can equal an overall better finished product. The camera i used to film my continuity and my final piece was a cannon 550D. These camera allowed me to film in full HD which made it an overall better experience for the audience. Also this camera allowed me to change the frames per second (FPS) when filming, I filmed both pieces on 50 FPS so that he film could run as smoothly as possible and didn't jump at any stage in the films.

I also improved my knowledge on different editing software. At first I attempted to edit my film on an apple mac provided by the school, but after I has edited it a didn't like it, it wasn't edited to how I imagined. I Started looking for an different and better software that I could edit my film on. My friend Zack told me about the software he has edited his on and it seemed to help me edit the film how I desired. I borrowed his laptop for a while and edit my piece exactly how I wanted it. Sony Vegas pro 12 allowed me to ensure that the effects and overlaps of film were done to the best of my ability. This software was crucial as I involved cutbacks in my final piece.

7) looking back at you preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in progression to the final product?
